More than Technology: Preparing Teachers for the Online Environment (Cira B)

Michael Speziale, Wilkes University
Michele Gill, Performance Learning Systems

Excellent teachers transitioning to the online world need more than training in technology. Participants will leave this session with a clear understanding of the unique knowledge, skills, strategies, and dispositions critical to excellence in online teaching and learning. From communication skills to instructional design, from community building to legal expertise; online teachers must be jacks of all trades, and masters of content.

Our presentation PowerPoint is now available here: http://web.wilkes.edu/michael.speziale

To all of the 70+ folks who took the time to join us before dinner on Monday night...THANK YOU! What a wonderful group you are! We've pasted the "step by step" directions for neutral correction and the handout information below.

The steps for neutral correction:

  • Go ahead and write what you think. Easy to fill it with you-messages…this is a good first draft! Do this in a word doc…NOT in your email…too risky!
  • Rearrange every sentence to avoid the “you’s” and “your’s.”
  • It is now a very firm (yet neutral) correction. For serious infractions, this is where you might stop.
    • Examples of when you’d use this tone: Obvious plagiarism, Abusive language
    • Even in most severe cases, NEUTRALITY is critical
  • Presume Innocence and add I-statements
    • The guilty are never offended when we assume they’re innocent.
    • The innocent will definitely be offended when we accuse them of guilt.
    • You have EVERYTHING to lose and nothing to gain in sending a message that can be interpreted defensively
